Newsletter - Issue 13 - 9 Aug 06
We received a notice this week that the Application for Resource Consent - Additional Night Games decision has been extended until Friday 25th August 2006 due to the complexity of issues the commissioners need to work through.

Eden Park Development

The recent survey we included within the members area, showed that there is support for the developments at Eden Park, but there are still some concerns.  It's important you voice these concerns via the website or by contacting the officers of this organisation or by contacting Graham Walton, the Eden Park Trust Board Community Liaison officer ( email feedback@edenpark.co.nz - mobile 027 558 1009 ). This is especially important if you have any concerns regarding shading issues, light spill during construction etc.

We will be creating a survey in the members area of the website shortly to enable you to voice your opinion.  There is also a Bulletin Board area, so please feel free to make a comment.

Eden Park Commentator

The Eden Park Trust board will be distributing their Commentator Newsletter this weekend which will be in your letterbox soon.  It is described as a "SPECIAL EDITION GUIDE TO THE RESOURCE CONSENT APPLICATION" as they lodged today the resource consent for the redevelopment of Eden Park as well as additional night games for both Rugby World Cup 2011 and Cricket World Cup 2015.

You can download the Eden Park Commentator Newsletter here.

The Eden Park Trust Board is applying for an additional 11 night games in 2011 for the Rugby World Cup tournament and an additional 10 day/night games in 2015 associated with the Cricket World Cup.  This increased number of night games will only apply during these tournaments and not on an ongoing basis.  Kick-off for the Rugby World Cup games will typically be between 7.30pm and 9pm. Games will be scheduled to end no later than 11 pm (allowing for half time and injury time). Cricket World Cup games would also be scheduled to end by 11pm.

With regards the redevelopment of Eden Park they list the key features of the redevelopment;

  • total capacity of 60,000 for rugby and approximately 50,000 for cricket
  • a new three-tier, South Stand, replacing the old South and South West stands, with a capacity of approximately 24,000.  The new South Stand will be bigger than the existing stand, reaching approximately to the knuckle of the existing lights
  • a new three-tier East Stand to replace the Terraces. The new stand will have a far higher standard of amenity for fans and will mitigate effects – less noise and light ‘spill’ – for neighbours
  • a state-of-the-art translucent appearance to the outer shell of the new stands
  • the main ground developed to meet International Cricket specifications, and improved spectator viewing for cricket fixtures by realigning the portable pitch to a north/south position
  • a “front door” for Eden Park off Sandringham Road
  • a transport hub, featuring a pedestrian bridge between Eden Park and Kingsland, and a bus and coach drop-off area
  • an internal concourse that allows patrons to circulate inside the stadium, instead of on local streets
  • sports practice area and community green
  • world-class facilities in the new South and East stands including food and beverage outlets, toilets and corporate areas
  • more covered seats – up from 23,000 to approximately 38,000

Dimensions of the new South and East stands
Stand Maximum height above playing field
South 42m – height of façade on the Reimers Avenue frontage
44m – leading edge of roof on the playing field frontage
East 42m – height of facade where it adjoins the South Stand
36m – height of facade mid East Stand
33m (approx) – height of facade where it adjoins the ASB Stand extension

They highlight the Community benefits as;
  • a “front door” for Eden Park off Sandringham Road, which will reduce day-to-day traffic in Cricket Avenue and Reimers Avenue
  • Eden Park to become part of the neighbourhood through an open plan approach to design and the establishment of community green space
  • separation of vehicles and pedestrians
  • removal of perimeter fence to improve public accessibility
  • landscaped training area adjacent to Sandringham Road available for community use when not being used for training
  • lights incorporated under the South Stand roof will help contain stadium lighting
  • redevelopment of the East Stand will help contain stadium noise
  • links the neighbourhood with Kingsland Rail Station and the Kingsland shops
  • an internal concourse that allows patrons to circulate around the ground instead of on local streets
I recommend that you all read the Eden Park Commentator and view the Resource Consent Application, copies of the full application can also be viewed at;
  • Auckland City Council service centre at 35 Graham Street, Auckland city
  • Mt Albert Community Library, 84 St Lukes Road, Mt Albert
  • Central City Library, 44 to 46 Lorne Street, Auckland city
  • ASB Stand reception at Eden Park, which is open normal business hours

A summary is also available online at: www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/edenpark

Next steps

  • Application lodged with Auckland City Council 9 August
  • Application publicly notified and open for submissions 13 August
  • Submissions close 8 September
  • Hearing by independent commissioners 15 November
  • Decision expected prior to Christmas

It is important for all neighbours to ensure that their voice is heard, so please send us your comments so we as an association can collate as we will be making a submission based on feedback we receive from our members.  Remember any person, even if not directly affected by the proposed activity, can make a submission on a publicly notified resource consent application.
