New stadium dead in the water
27 November 2006

Hopes for a waterfront stadium in Auckland appear over after the Government today conditionally supported plans to redevelop Eden Park.

Cabinet today decided to support upgrading Eden Park, subject to resolution of design, funding and governance issues, a press release from Minister for the Rugby World Cup Trevor Mallard.

This followed Auckland City Council last week voting in favour of the waterfront option and the regional council voting against the idea.

"Cabinet today considered two options given this lack of unanimity - either to convene a group of all key parties to see whether issues with the waterfront could be overcome, or to support a redevelopment of Eden Park, which was the Auckland City Council's second option, subject to further work," Mr Mallard said.

"Cabinet has decided to support a redeveloped Eden Park but has also asked for more work to be done to agree on the redevelopment design."
